About Max

In 1999, I thought I’d have a look into making money online. All sorts of things had gone south, work wise and in my personal life. In the summer of that year, someone left a flyer on my car that read: “Got A Computer, Work From Home.” Right down my line, I thought.

It turned out to be a big MLM company, and the “Got A Computer” thing didn’t really turn out the way I imagined it would. (This scenario did repeat itself a few times…) I signed up, hesitant at first, then got stuck in and did reasonably well. Within 6 months of getting into action, I had climbed on to the first rung of the ladder that was going to take me to a glorious future and financial independence.

More than a year later, I was still stuck on the same rung. I had hit a wall, as it were. To cut this story short, I never managed to get beyond the wall in spite of following all sorts of advice about working smart and not hard and whatever else you can envisage.

Fast forward to the summer of 2008. I was still making a few pennies here and there with my MLM business, but my way of going about it obviously wasn’t going to get me where I need to be. To this day, I still use the products myself (they’re fantastic) but I haven’t been able to persuade others of it in large enough numbers. That’s me, though. The company itself had gone from $2billion worldwide turnover when I joined to about $4 Billion this year (2010). Someone must be doing something right. It just wasn’t me.

Meanwhile, having dealt with a number of personal, family and business issues I thought I’d have another look into making money online.

This time, I signed up to a mentored program that promised… In a nutshell, it was about driving people offline to a website and selling them physical information products (CDs, DVDs, manuals). It was a sort of late 1990s / early 2000s model of affiliate marketing although I didn’t know this at the time. The less said about it, the better… It was an expensive failure.

I learned a few things from this failure, though. The most important insight was that there definitely is money to be made online. I just needed to find a way to do it reliably. I tried various methods, suffered information overload, and bumbled along without a mentor making a sale here or there. I got into Twitter (have a look at the sidebar), Facebook, Ecademy, I tried affiliate, trifilliate, JVs, and what have you. Nothing systematic and sustainable, though.

I don’t know whether you noticed, but I do one thing well that, in the end, will lead to success: I never give up. A good friend once likened me to a Rottweiler with jaw cramp. I wouldn’t argue with that.

That’s where I am at now.

Oh, you’d like to know more about me… Well, I lived, studied and worked in a number of places (in no particular order):

The view from my desk taken today

In the process I picked up a few languages, I have a wonderful daughter who is about to start secondary school, no pets, and a nice view from my desk.

Here is what it looked like in the winter of 2009:

(BTW, making the video didn’t cost anything. I shot it with my digital still camera. I used the software that came with it to remove the street and aircraft noise from the video clips and some free software from the Internet to convert the soundtrack from Youtube to MP3. Then I put it all together with Windows Movie Maker on my old XP laptop. Simples ;-) )

Where will I go from here? I’ll document this in my blog. Here is the reason why: my mentor told me to. Here is another reason why:

“Commitment is most effective in changing a person’s self-image and future behaviour
when it is active, public and effortful.”

(from: Influence by Robert Cialdini – go on, click on it, it’s not an affiliate link)

I am committing to making it now.

There, I said it, you are my witness.

Join me on the journey. It starts on my home page.

Thanks, Janet.

There is another step I have taken, almost beyond persistence: failure is not an option.

We’re going to crack this time :-)

Thanks, Kin. You may ask: Herbalife (I joined about 11 years ago).
I have a website that I set up initially just to promote Herbalife but now it’s a general purpose site, all about Healthy Breakfast.
My main activity now is Internet Marketing, though, not MLM, but please don’t tell my upline :-) .
What’s your MLM company?
