Have the Search Engines Gone Mad?

A couple of days ago, I needed a rapid answer to a very urgent question:

“What species is a hare?”

I ‘m sure you, too, are dying to find out.

I know I was. So I googled it and was frankly bowled over by the answer.

I was bowled over because it made no sense whatsoever, and that in all three search engines, Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Why on earth did these search colossuses send me to recipes, consulting chemists or some obscure electronics manufacturer out in the wilds of Hertfordshire when they promised to guide me to a Wiki page that was supposed to contain a fast answer to a simple question?

Mysterious? Worrying? Have the search engines gone mad?

Eventually, as I continued to ask, a pattern began to emerge. I noticed a strange recurrence in the status bar during searches. To cut a long story really short, my laptop needed anti-rootkit treatment. Here is how and why:

I never thought about getting one until yesterday when the tree surgeon arrived to check out the tree that threatens to lift the house.

When he parked his car in my drive I couldn’t believe it! A PR savvy tree care company displaying their QR Code not just on his car but, so he told me, on all their vehicles (rear and either side)!

That’s it. I had to get mine. Here it is:

The Foundations of Internet Marketing Success

In his The Foundations of Internet Marketing Success, Matt Olson sets himself the task to explain these foundations on a mere 28 pages. This is a tall order. It gets even taller with Matt’s bold claim that

“The formula for IM success has its foundation in “doing and thinking in a certain way”. The following pages contain the blueprint.”

And:

“These are universal principles of success and they work 100% of the time.”

As if this wasn’t bold and daring enough he ups the ante by a few degrees with this:

“I want you to know that this report has nothing to do with doing any new age mental “stunts” in the hopes that money will magically appear in your bank account. On the contrary, the following information is practical, down to earth advice on how to change your thinking so you perform in a more effective, efficient manner.”

Now the question is: Does he deliver?

He does.

Matt Olson has been a full time Internet Marketer for a number of years and generates a significant income. Most importantly, he has earns his money not by teaching but by Internet marketing. This means that he knows what he is talking about when he occasionally puts out a Internet Marketing course. He teaches what he does.

He does the same with his Foundations of Internet Marketing Success. He teaches what he does and what helped him be successful.

No is no miracle cure, no “Secret” although at times I wondered when “The Secret” would pop out of the hat. In the end, it didn’t. Good. Instead, Matt Olson made good on his promise and produced solid guidelines to follow and illustrated them with his own experience that took him from Internet newbie to successful Internet Marketer.

The Upside of his Foundations: it was written by a successful Internet Marketer for Internet Marketers. He knows what he is talking about, and he focuses on the right methods that will lead to success. It was written by a practitioner in both camps, Internet Marketing and Mindset for Success.

The Downside of his Foundations: like with every other course, the author cannot do it for us. We have to do it ourselves. We are the downside, pushed by our laziness, complacency, procrastination.

Matt Olson shows us clearly what to do and, the framework of 28 pages permitting, how to do it. There is also a bibliography for those who want to dig deeper. The rest is entirely up to us.

As with many recent things, this ebook arrived just at the right moment for me, reminding me again of what it takes to get where I will get. There can never be enough reminders. I will do what I recommend that everyone should do:

Get it, read it and follow exactly what he tells us to do. And at $7, frankly, it’s a steal.

Captcha Or No Captcha

Don’t you just hate them?

I know I do.

I’m talking about specimen of this:

Or even worse, this:

Captchas. Beloved of the Google Keyword Tool and other online behemoths forcing you to try and try again, refresh repeatedly, then guess and eventually digress into foul language.

Why do they use them?

To drive us mad? Probably, but also to stop spammers and their tame robots from flooding website with machine generated, incessant requests, messages and spurious backlinks leading pretty frequently to quite nasty things that lurk behind those links.

These giants of the Internet generally can afford to use them because we have to use their sites and services whether we like it or not.

Most annoyingly, in spite of all the antipathy they generate, you see them in use at times on sites that are much smaller. There, they hang out at the comment area where blog followers gather.

Some people compare them to a bad stench that drives fans and visitors away because the prospect of battling with one of these captchas is something pretty much everyone can do without.

I fully sympathise. I don’t really want to have to fight one of those after having spent time writing my comment to a blog post. My time is precious and so is my energy. Why should I unless I absolutely have to?

Ah, the sweet sound of Radio WIIFM.

Ahem. Now I have to confess. Seriously.

Yesterday, I installed a captcha on my new site. Yes. It’s here (click if you don’t believe me):

May I claim mitigating circumstances, please?

Firstly, I did not install one of those hate, frustration and apoplexy inducing monsters. Mine comes from a more civilised lineage:

I, for one, don’t mind these.

Why did I do such a thing, though? Do I really want to drive off visitors to my site by making them shudder at the mere thought of commenting on posts and articles?

Of course, not. That is why I chose this rather genteel looking bouncer. Because a bouncer it is, and it will hopefully deter any troublesome spambot.

There is a reason for this madness. Hence my plea for mitigation.

You see, my very first website had a completely unprotected blog. I didn’t know from Adam what this suspicious looking Akismet thingy was that hovered in the plugin den, let alone allow myself to use it. Not a clever move as I was about to find out.

I wrote a blog post about how to capture still images from videos. At the time this was a not altogether obvious procedure.

As a consequence of the chosen topic, my post received a large number of visits from Russian ladies who couldn’t wait to make my acquaintance. About 300 visits … per day.

As I didn’t know how to deal with this attention seeking behaviour intelligently, and as I had no spam protection, I opted for radical surgery. I pulled the post.

Today, of course, me and my now great friend Akismet know how to deal with such overwhelming attention. Unfortunately, though, my new friend is at times somewhat overzealous and occasionally relegates a genuine post to the slammer. Which means that I then have to trawl through dozens if not hundreds of spam messages to rescue the serious comments from their miserable existence in the spam folder.

To give you a live example: A couple of minutes ago a located a trackback to this blog from Ryan Deiss’ Digitalmarketerlab. It was one in only 55 spam messages, so easily spotted. But…

Add to this that my new site is about video creation, and you can easily imagine that it has the potential of attracting hundreds of Russian and other ladies every day. You bet that I won’t trawl through these hordes.

That’s why I decided to lend a helping hand to trusted old Akismet by recruiting the rather friendly looking Si-Captcha-for-Wordpress as a doorman.

It comes recommended by well over a million users, so cannot be all bad. Installation was a cinch. We’ll see how it will perform its duties.

Video Marketing And Money Laundry

In my last blog post, I mentioned in passing that I had blown a major fuse and promised to bring you up to speed on this momentous event.

Before I do it, let me ask you a question:

Have you been had recently? Have you, too, bought yet another report that promised the world, real fast, and produced absolutely no results?

I have to put up my hand to that. There are many reports on my hard drive that promise easy SEO riches, Internet mastery and profit domination, which on closer inspection are not even useful for recycling. I mean, how do you recycle binary code?

With my hard disk creaking under the burden of accumulated reports, courses and guides, time had come to put this huge collection of virtual pages to the test.

Before I go into detail, a word of warning. If you are wedded to believing the gurus, to the veracity of Internet marketing ebooks, especially those that promise the world for $17, READ ON AT YOUR OWN RISK. You may come in for a rude awakening from a slumber that thrives on the acquisition of the next shiny new thing. I know what this does to you. I was woken up rudely, very rudely, indeed.

Here is what happened:

To relieve the “creaking hard disk” syndrome, I took the most “promising” (in both senses of the word) and serious looking reports and condensed them into a compilation. The best of the self-acclaimed best found themselves together between the virtual covers of my very own step-by-step how-to-guide.

I decided put these methods to the test.

I had a brand new website that I had not yet promoted. Of course, I had done all the On Page SEO for this site, but I had not started yet on Off Page SEO with one exception: I had registered the sitemap with Google’s webmaster tools. Time to start testing.

How do you test stuff like this and, more importantly, what do you test for?

This part is actually quite easy. All these rapid-fire super-hyper push-button methods promise that it takes no time at all to index your sites all over the internet. They claim that your sites will be indexed instantly and will start popping up in the Search Engines between right now or, at the very least, within 24 hours.

All I had to do was follow instructions, check in a short while later, and then again 24 hours from now. It’s a wrap. Well, I thought, I have a few minutes to spare now, so let’s do it.

I set out to do as instructed. That is, I registered and pinged my site left right and center. I also submitted the sitemap to Bing and Yahoo and, for good measure, added a video sitemap to all three search engines. So far so good, I thought. Being a tad suspicious, though, I did what I hadn’t done previously. I checked.

Oh boy! Why didn’t I stay in make-believe land and dance with the Internet fairies? Instead, I actually had to go and check whether what the gurus and their imitators taught was true!

Because of this, the few minutes it should have taken to register my site with all these fabulous super-easy tools turned into hours, six hours, to be precise. Eventually, I began to scramble for a few extra valves to let off the steam that threatened to blow my mind because, on closer inspection, most of these so-called indexing sites simply did not do what they were supposed to, while a few sites came up with somewhat less than confidence inspiring statements like: “This domain is for sale. Submit your offer now.” !!??#@@?# Whatever!

When I finished dealing with all the indexing sites I began to check for results. After all, a few hours had passed since I had started the “five minute” registration process. According to Yahoo and Bing, my site did not exist. Google was slightly different as I had registered the sitemap a week earlier with Google Webmaster Tools. But none of the results from the indexing sites were anywhere to be seen.

Result? Well, yes, I had sort of a result. When people tell you to register your site with Google Webmaster Tools, do it. It isn’t instantaneous but it works. But as far as all the other, super-hyper 5-minutes-work-and-your-site-will-be-indexed-right-now stuff goes, don’t believe it. I found no trace of it, neither 24 hours later nor 48 hours later. I guess if I had gone out for a coffee and an ice cream instead of slaving away for pretty much a whole working day, at the very least I would have had a nice taste in my mouth.

What does all this have to do with video marketing I hear you ask? Please, indulge me another minute and all will be revealed. After all, this is a serious issue.

I got so fed up with the total absence of results… Actually, fed up is probably THE understatement of the century. I had a major crisis of confidence in anything that was being touted as information on and about the Internet. To put it plainly, my continued online existence was at stake.

To help me let off steam I decided to have fun. I made a video, right there and then. I took a few pictures with my 5 year old Canon Powershot (an anti-diluvian digital camera by today’s standards; it was new in 2006), knocked out a few text slides with PowerPoint and combined the lot into a 30 second video; nothing fancy but satisfying. And, to add to my amusement, I uploaded it to Youtube.

Then the unexpected happened!

Indulge me yet again and let me digress once more, please. I had read a number of ebooks on video marketing, I had watched training videos and heard those in the know speak about how fast you can get videos listed on Youtube, the second biggest search engine after Google.

To be honest, after my still smarting experience with fast-indexing-guru-advice, all I was able to come up with about this sort of talk was “go ahead and pull the other one.” I suppose more out of instinct and habit than for any other reason I added tags, title and a link in the description to my little fun video.

Yes, don’t worry, I will tell you what the video is called and where to find it: It’s called “Money Laundry” and here it is.

By the way, the last thing on my mind when I uploaded this video was getting it ranked. I just wanted to be able to show it to a few friends and, of course, to my daughter.

Here is the chronology of events:

I had created the video in the morning, uploaded it to Youtube and checked half an hour later, just for fun. By checked, I mean “searched for >Money Laundry< on Youtube.” It was nowhere to be found. Cool.

A couple of hours later, I showed the video to my friend. After all, I had photographed her, and it was her artwork that I had used for it.

I opened Youtube, entered Money Laundry… My jaw came crushing to the floor. Frankly, I was flabbergasted, gobsmacked, and you could have knocked me over with a feather, all at the same time.

The video was now ranked no. 2 on Youtube against 3,100 competing videos for the search term ‘Money Laundry’ (broad search, to be precise).

I had done nothing special to get it ranked and certainly a heck of a lot less than I had done to my website that still was AWOL in the search engines.

I put this down not as a result but as a freak occurrence, a Darwinian mutation leading nowhere. We went out for lunch.

Later in the afternoon, I modified the video to respect my friend’s wishes. The next morning, I deleted the video from Youtube and uploaded the new version but kept the same information I had used for the previous one, that is to say, the same title, tags, link and description.

Youtube did not like this one bit. When I looked for the video a couple of hours later, it was nowhere to be found. Even worse, when I searched for my channel without being logged in, Youtube, utterly refused to acknowledge the existence of the video. I couldn’t blame Youtube, though, not after having confused it thoroughly by first deleting something and then uploading the exact same thing again. Of course, when I logged into my channel, the video was there.

I left it at that. Frankly, I couldn’t care less about ranking this particular video. Or so I thought. However, vanity and obsessiveness never let go, don’t they? Late that night, just before going to sleep, I checked it again, this time from my my ipod.

About 14 hours or so had elapsed since I had uploaded the new version whose mere existence Youtube had refused to acknowledge earlier in the day. The impossible had happened.

It had risen back to no. 3.

The next morning, I checked again. It was still no.3. Absentmindedly, I sort of pondered the description and suddenly realised that it did not even include the keyword, Money Laundry, that I had listed in the tags. I quickly edited the description: I entered the keyword just after the link, saved it and checked back a few minutes later.

What do you think had happened?

Literally, within minutes the video had climbed to no. 2 again.

I don’t know what you make of it but here is my conclusion from this roller coaster weekend: Unlike some other stuff that shall go nameless, Video Marketing methodology for Youtube WORKS! If ever there was a test without any preconditions, this was it. It showed conclusively that following standard procedure for Youtube will generate results, and it will generate them fast. Trust me, I’m no guru.

Let me anticipate a possible objection: I had done all this not from my home ISP, so the result is not skewed by Youtube recognising a familiar address.

How had I done this? That was easy. I had gone for a break to a different city in a different country with a different language and staid in the apartment of a friend with a wireless connection. I had gone to Paris, but don’t tell anyone.

This happened about three weeks ago. And the outcome of it all? The very same day I decided to return to video. I picked up where I had left off nearly a year ago, and now my video guide is almost finished. It will be different from the usual offerings. It will be…

Multiple Millions Later…

14 months ago I embarked on my Internet Journey when I started this blog and the Internet marketing course with Alex Jeffreys.

14 months and multiple millions later…

Wouldn’t that have been a success story worth writing about! I wish.

What happened?

Did I make my fortune?

Did I bomb out completely?

Would you like to know?

The fact that I am back on my blog is proof, I guess, that I am still at it. As a matter of fact, and let me put it on the record here and now, I am here to stay and will reach the top. Perhaps, because I simply don’t know how to give up.

So, let me come clean. I did not make multiple millions. I didn’t even make one million. I earned what in the great scheme of things can be called a few pennies.

Yes, I made my first dollar online, even a few hundred dollars. But nowhere near what I had envisaged, planned or hoped for. That is still to come.

Would you call this failure?

I call it a steep learning curve.

In the ten months since the end of the coaching course with Alex Jeffreys, I learned a lot about the nuts and bolts of Internet marketing, in particular affiliate marketing. I put up multiple sites and know how to fill them with content. I learned a lot about On Page SEO and Off Page SEO, enough to get a few sites to the top of page 1 of Google in fairly competitive niches.

The most important lesson in affiliate marketing that I learned, however, was that you absolutely have to get your niche and keyword research spot on, and that it is simply not worth going for low commission rates. Now what does that say about building Amazon review sites?

You see where I had made my mistakes?

Another lesson: keep a firm grip on your time, plan your day and stick to it. Like so many of us, I am a master of the tangent. Do you know how easy it is to get stuck in a discussion about a miniscule point on how to construct your link and anchor text? Five hours later, I was back where I had started and left things as they were, much the wiser, mentally exhausted and having just lost … five hours.

Economists have a saying about throwing good money after bad and that you shouldn’t do it. Time, indeed, is money. Having just spent five hours on nothing and a few days getting there, I couldn’t just give up on the site, so I spent a few more days polishing it, crossing i’s and dotting t’s (yes, this is what you do when you become obsessive). Ten days later… Time flies like crazy.

Finally, about two weeks ago, I had yet another site ready to roll having avoided many of my earlier mistakes. I started implementing traffic generation measures… and then I blew a fuse. Actually, I blew a whole circuit board and then half a power plant with it. Nothing worked the way it was supposed to do! (Ahem, my exclamation mark tells me that the embers are still smouldering.)

I took a deep breath, a creative breath. I realised what I had done. Don’t do it if you can avoid it. I’ll tell you the details in one of my next blog posts.

Here is the short of it: I had fallen in love and given it up. Bad move. Epic fail, as my daughter is wont to say. Whatever.

During Alex Jeffreys course, I had listened to his webinar with Maria Andros, the Video Queen. Who wouldn’t fall in love with Maria? Actually, it was more the ‘Video’ bit than the ‘Queen’ that had turned me on. I threw myself into video, and then stopped again. Sure, I kept creating a few videos on and off, but I abandoned my video project in favour of going the affiliate marketing route.

Now, I’m back and freshly in love again. This time, it’s the Video Boss. Yes, you guessed right, it is again more the ‘Video’ bit than the ‘Boss’ that had turned me on again. So, here I am, wiser and even more… let’s say, cheesed off with the push button gurus, ready to roll out Phase 2 of my Internet marketing journey. It will be different. This time, it will rock.
