NoFollow, DoFollow And The Backlink Dance

DoFollow or NoFollow? Should you or shouldn’t you? Set you blog to DoFollow, that is, or link to NoFollow sites?

In my blog post about Turning “Nofollow” Into “Dofollow” I talked about why I prefer DoFollow to NoFollow for blogs and showed you how to turn off the default NoFollow setting in WordPress blogs.

I haven’t had any problems with this setting, mainly for two reasons: I activated the Akismet spam control plugin, which does a great job watching out for those obvious spammers (right now, the count stands at 125), and I monitor all comments. No automated approval on my blog.

There is more to the whole DoFollow/NoFollow discussion, especially when you take it beyond your own blog. Obviously, it is all about ranking in the search engines and receiving link juice. Should you link to NoFollow sites? How do you find DoFollow sites? What is the solution with virtually most sites being NoFollow?

Here is a pretty useful video by Jared Croslow who sheds a lot of light on all these questions and more:

I hope you enjoyed the video, and I would really appreciate your thoughts about this topic.

  1. Oh what a nice video – I never understood the whole Dofollow, or Nofollow thing, but not only does the video explain the difference in terms of search engine reactions to one or the other but it also show a great trick to find blogs with the dofollow tags. Very valuable info.
    Thanks for sharing

    1. Thanks for your kind comment, Tina.
Coming to think of it, if you enable DoFollow it’s important to keep moderating all comments and keep your spam filter alive and happy particularly once your blog starts accumulating page rank. 🙂

  2. Hey Max:

Thanks for sharing this video. I never used my keyword with my name unless the blog used the keyword plugin. I guess I can give it a try and see how it works. Look I just used it on this comment.
