Turning “Nofollow” Into “Dofollow”

In my last post, I asked for help with the ubiquitous “nofollow” links in WordPress blogs because WordPress links are “nofollow” by default.

I don’t think this is right. Why should someone who contributes to my blog not benefit from some backlink power to his or her blog?

Fortunately, there is a solution. A big thank you to Glyn and Mike who responded immediately and helped me make “nofollow” links a thing of the past.

Have a look at this screen shot.

Here, you can see the pinked out “nofollow” links but, crucially, both Mike’s and Glyn’s names are not in pink.

When I hovered over Mike’s name, the underscore showed that it was a link and, correctly, the URL of his blog appeared at the bottom of the browser window (this works only for Firefox because the extension is not available for Chrome or IE).

The same happened with Glyn’s comment.

The “dofollow” plugin I use is Semiologic’s Do Follow Plugin For WordPress. You can download it from Semiologic at http://www.semiologic.com/software/dofollow/

Installation is simple. Download the file to your computer but do not unzip it. In your WordPress Dashboard, go to Plugins, click on “Add new” and then “Upload”. Next, click on “Choose file” and upload the zip file, then return to your Plugins page and activate the plugin. Simples.

So, no more “nofollow” links on comments to my blog post.

Please, permit me to invite you to leave your comments here and share a jar of link juice. 😉

    1. The pleasure is all mine, Glyn.

Thanks for alerting me to the dofollow plug in in the first place.

  1. Hey Max,

I landed on your site again and noticed your post about the dofollow vs nofollow question.

The more people read about this the more questions seem to arise. But I still believe the dofolow route is the best.

BTW. I use the same dofollow plugin that you recommended in your post. Nice.

    Good information, Max.

  2. Hi Max,

This was so useful for me because I had no idea either. I have downloaded myself. So are you saying if I have a “no follow” plugin installed in my WordPress now that I should deactivate after I have activated the “do follow” plugin? Just wanted to make sure I am doing it correctly!.

    Thanks again!

    Anna

    1. Hi Anna,
No need to to deactivate. WordPress default setup is “nofollow”. The “Dofollow” plugin remedies this situation once it’s installed and activated.
      I hope this helps.
      To all our success!

  3. Wow Max,

Thanks for the tip. I never knew about the dreaded “nofollow” link in WordPress blogs. I’m trying to educate myself on one-way back links and the information really helps. I will now share this with my readers.

    Thanks again,

  4. Hey Max,

Thanks for the great post. I didn’t even realize that my links were nofollow. it kind of defeats the purpose if we don’t share the link juice.

You are working hard. Keep up the good work.

    All the best.

  5. Wow Max!

I honestly had no idea that any of this ever existed, but you have got me sold!

Thanks a ton for the knowledge-bomb you just dropped. I immediately installed the dofollow plugin, so hopefully everything goes swimmingly from now on.

You have great stuff on the site and I look forward to learning more.

    1. Thanks for your comment, Matt.
To be frank, I’m not that far ahead of you in the learning curve. What I found is that the WMA 3.0 community really motivates me and spurs me on to do just a little bit more.
BTW, I left a response to your Thesis question in the forum.
      Talk again soon.

  6. Hey Max,

Really have helpful content on your blog. I installed the “dofollow” plugin and am also reading through your other backlink post.

Appreciate leaving a nice comment on my blog, and BTW I got this Flexibility theme information from Sally Neill’s blog :-).

    Cheers!
