Success!! … And Failure

In the past few months, I have not been updating you here on what I’ve been doing. I apologise unreservedly. I know, I promised to keep you up to date on my Internet marketing journey. I hope you’ll forgive me for having been so erratic about it. I’ll do better from now on. But first, let me tell you what happened.

I’ve been busy, very busy trying to make the best of the Christmas season. Best of all, this took place in the “real” world, far removed from ‘Internet marketing for the sake of Internet marketing.’

To be sure, I stayed online. Just not in the make-money-online niche. My attitude is “first show that you can achieve something, then show the world how you did it.” I prefer this to “teaching” stuff I haven’t even used myself…

So, in the process, I learned a heck of a lot and achieved great results as well as, errrr…, embarrassing failure. I promise to tell it as it happened, warts and all. Yes, I guess I’ll also tell you that I did not do it all by myself. But not right now.

OK, as you’re asking: No, I did not outsource. I shared the work with a business partner. We did everything ourselves. Our thinking behind it was to do it first, then outsource the next round with the money earned in the first round.

Here is what we did achieve: We managed to rank a website, actually, more than one but let’s just stick to this one. As I said, we managed to get this site to rank pretty high up in Google. No money spent on traffic like PPC or other stuff. We had only free traffic from pure and straight forward organic ranking.

Depending on how you look at it, you could say this site dominated page 1 of Google. At the same time, it performed, well, not quite as expected.

Let’s look at the bright side first. How about holding positions no. 2, 3, 4 and 5 on page 1 of Google after 6 weeks against 108,000,000 (million) competing sites in the local market? Not bad, is it. 🙂

Hmm, when the time comes, I’ll reveal why, at the same time, it failed abysmally. Just in case you don’t want to repeat my mistakes.

I hope this does not sound too cryptic. In future blog posts, I’ll go into detail on everything I wrote here. If I were to do it now, I’d have to write a fairly long ebook. I couldn’t face this now. With my way of writing, this would take a long time, far too long, and I wouldn’t be able to get on with any work, money work, that is. Which would be fine with me if I were a guru raking in millions every year. But I am not … raking in millions 🙁 As far as gurudom is concerned, I’d rather stay away from it. Increasingly, gurus are getting a bad name, and I prefer to keep my reputation intact.

‘Nuff said. Let me tell you what I’ll be writing about over the next few months:

I’ll show you the tools, methods, shortcuts, resources I used, what worked and what didn’t work. And, yes, video played an important part in it, so I’ll be talking about video, too.

It will probably cover most aspects of Internet marketing.

I look forward to sharing this with you. For now, all I want to do is wish you a happy, healthy and very prosperous 2011.

  1. Hi Max, just stumbled across your blog and really liking it.

I’ve been online for 5 years now.. doing and teaching IM.. but not a millionaire yet either. I am making a decent income but need to get out of my comfort zone.

Looking forward to keeping up with your progress too. I really enjoy blogs like this.

    1. Thanks, Stuart.

Yep, online success and the simple button to push only join hands in fairy tales. Right now, I’m still trying to get into my comfort zone 🙂

I’ll hop over to your blog later.

  4. Hey Max,

Wow, “no. 2, 3, 4 and 5 on page 1 of Google after 6 weeks against 108,000,000 (million) competing sites in the local market” is pretty impressive! Great job! I used to study SEO and tried a little bit myself. It is not an easy thing. So I give you kudos! I’ll be looking forward to hearing more from you about SEO!

    Happy New Year!

  5. Hey Max,

Looking forward to hearing more about your story, I’m with you and Gary above on the gurudom front, I’d like to think that we can change things if enough of us get together but I may be just dreaming!

great post, keep up the good work

    Simon

    1. Thank you, Simon.

If you dream intensely enough, who knows, your dream may well become reality. Especially if you are able to enrol others.

That reminds me, I ought to post something about the power of focused if not laser targeted dreaming. It’s an awesome weapon.

  6. Max – this statement is SO true:

“As far as gurudom is concerned, I’d rather stay away from it. Increasingly, gurus are getting a bad name, and I prefer to keep my reputation intact.”

As you are aware I have been warning people about the IM zombies and vampires for some time via my reports. The Internet is awash with far too much USELESS information (thanks to the IM zombies) and SCAMS (thanks to the IM vampires).

Looking forward to seeing your results.

    1. I read you, Gary.
In the sense of “I read your IM Zombie report before I wrote this.” It’s time to reintroduce core values. BTW, I’m looking forward to your new report.

I’ll be discussing my results here over the next weeks and months, and not only results from the last three months but also from my ongoing work.

I’m looking forward to this myself. 🙂

Keep up the good work, Gary.

      Max
